Tummy Tuck
Sometimes, all the sit-ups in the world won’t eliminate excess
fat and skin around the midsection. Healthy diets don’t always
do the trick either. Luckily, there is a solution—abdominoplasty.
Abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck," is a cosmetic procedure
sure to give you sleeker, more defined abs.
During abdominoplasty, surgeons remove excess skin and fatty tissue
from the middle and lower abdomen, and tighten muscles of the abdominal
wall. In some cases, patients lose inches, pounds, and even a clothing
size, depending on how much skin and fat is removed. The entire
procedure takes between two and five hours, depending on how much
work is needed. The results are permanent provided patients avoid
gaining weight. Abdominoplasty can be combined with other surgical
procedures, including liposuction.
Liposuction
This popular procedure removes unwanted fat from specific areas
of the body. It is a simple, long-term solution to an age-old
problem, and the results are astounding.
The most common treatment areas include the upper thigh, abdomen,
buttocks, and hips, but liposuction may also be performed on the
face and neck, upper arms, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. It
may also be used to correct enlarged breasts in men (see Breast
Reduction).
The best candidates for liposuction are relatively healthy patients
who have stubborn, localized areas of fat that do not respond well
to traditional diet and exercise. Patients with firm, elastic skin
experience better results; those with looser skin may require additional
surgery to remove and tighten excess skin. In all cases, special
garments and dressings must be worn after surgery to control swelling
and promote healing.
Liposuction is performed using a hollow, metal instrument called
a cannula. Inserted through a small incision, the cannula is passed
back and forth, breaking up fat cells, which are then sucked out
with a vacuum or syringe. In some situations, a special cannula
may be used that emits ultrasonic energy to break down fatty deposits.
Another technique, tumescent liposuction, involves the infiltration
of fluid containing diluted local anesthetic and epinephrine into
areas of fatty deposits.
Liposuction may be performed on its own or in conjunction with
other procedures including facelift, abdominoplasty, or thigh lift.
It should be noted, however, that liposuction does not improve
the appearance of cellulite.
Implants
If you’re self-conscious about any underdeveloped part of
your body, implants may be the answer. Most people are surprised
by the number of places implants can effectively be used, including
calf, chest, and face. However unique you think your implant request
may be, please don’t hesitate to discuss it with your surgeon.
Not only do implants enhance definition and overall appearance,
but they are also used for reconstructive purposes resulting from
accidents, illness, and congenital defects.
Both men and women are taking advantage of implants in record numbers.
One of the most popular is calf implants. For people who have underdeveloped
calf muscles—through nature, disease, or injury—this
surgery provides a fuller and shapelier appearance. An implant made
of a solid, but soft, inert material is inserted through an incision
in the crease of the knee. The result is very natural and attractive.
For chest implants, the implant is placed behind the pectoral
muscle through a small incision in the armpit. Made of a safe and
durable silicone rubber, the implants come in a large variety of
shapes and sizes to best conform to your specific needs. Following
surgery, the chest feels firm to the touch.
Facial implants, including chin implants (mentoplasty) and cheek
implants, are also gaining popularity. They can change the shape
and balance of the face by building up a weak receding chin, reshaping
a jaw line, and/or emphasizing cheekbones. Made of either solid
or semi-solid materials, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes,
which your surgeon will tailor to best suit your face. The results
look very natural and dramatic. Mild bruising and swelling may last
for several days, but scarring is minimal.
